Good Nutrition And Exercise For Healthful Living - "You Are What You Eat"

It is my mission to motivate all my readers to see how necessary it is to remain active and vital so as to be able to enjoy your senior years. Starting an exercise program is the best gift you can give yourself. The important thing is that once you start your program, you must remain motivated to keep it up. Once you get into the swing of it, you won't miss a day. If you do, and you feel guilty about it then you have reached the proper motivation. Remember too, the earlier you start exercising, the sooner you reap the rewards. Now that we know how important the exercise is, we have to discuss nutrition.
Now that we know how important the exercise is, we have to discuss nutrition. In past articles I promised to be on the lookout for any item that I thought might help in keeping us healthy and free from pain wherever possible. I have tried many nutritional products, some were all right, some did not make the grade, but I did find an excellent company with outstanding formulations, and you must also be on the lookout to find just such companies. These are proven formulas for a wide variety of deficiencies. The average person can benefit from these formulas, because, either due to diet or the inability of the body to absorb certain nutrients, they will be deficient in these, causing certain diseases or conditions. Remarkable advances in medical science, technology and the field of nutrition are allowing us to live longer. A male who reaches the age of 65 can expect to live another 15 years and a female another 19 years. The motivation to add exercise and good nutrition to our daily regimen, will not only help us achieve this goal, but can achieve even better results by living longer and staying vital and vigorous. Remember, whatever our age, our bodies must have the proper nutrients. This means less meat, butter, cheese, and eggs, sugars and drinks that contain sugar. And of course this means...NO SMOKING. An occasional drink is okay, even one for women and two for men is fine, but no more. This means eating more fish, chicken, fruits, vegetables, cereals and pasta.
Eating fewer calories will help keep off the pounds that tend to increase as we grow older. Putting on the extra pounds increases your risk of heart attack, diabetes plus other health problems. Read the labels on the foods you buy and remember that not all-low cal foods are low in fat, and not all-low fat foods are low in calories. They can be high in sugars, which will make them high in calories, and it's the calories that will put on the weight. Cutting down your portions will reduce the number of calories. Depending on your build and level of activity, the calorie requirements can vary. Of course if you are not active, you won't require as many calories. The calories above your requirement needs will put on the extra weight. A general rule of thumb for an inactive person is to multiply your weight by 10. (For example: 160 pounds requires 1600 calories). If you are more active, multiply your weight by 12 or 13, and for the very active, such athletes, runners, etc. multiply by 15. According to many studies, we know that certain vitamins, minerals and herb supplements can prevent some diseases and conditions, and will promote health. Among the supplements, antioxidants are getting more and more attention, as is calcium, potassium, folic acid, vitamin C, B complex, vitamin E and beta-carotene. As a person ages, they produce less stomach acid than a younger person will. This loss of stomach acid interferes with the body's ability to absorb vitamins and minerals, such as B-6, B-12, folic acid, calcium, zinc and iron. Deficiencies of any of these nutrients can cause memory loss and depression. The inability to absorb calcium causes loss of bone mass or osteoporosis which causes bones to become brittle and thin, which makes them break more easily with the slightest fall or trauma. They can even break spontaneously, which happens quite often. When this occurs at the hip, the bone breaks and the person falls, thinking the hip was broken in the fall, when in fact it wasn't.
Recognizing the need for proper nutrition and the need for supplementation to maintain that proper diet, I have always searched for companies that have produced formulas that will provide the quality of ingredients and formula composition necessary to maintain the health we all wish to attain. Before you purchase any vitamins, minerals and herb formulations, be sure that the company is a nationally recognized company and not an obscure company with products that will not pass the proper qualifications.
